Stuart is a Coastal and Fisheries Management practicioner that has been based in South East Asia (Philippines) since the early 1990's. He has worked at a variety of organizations and agencies, ranging from NGO to Local and National Government Agencies, project evaluations and funding agencies . He prides himself on being able to work with anyone from any walk of life, but admits when all is said I still prefer working with and dealing with fishermen and women in rural communities.
He originally came out as a volunteer marine biologist to the Philippines and has succeeded to date in never wanting to go back to live and work again in the UK - He still finds he has a niche to play in the Philippines and as long as he has something to add to the country, the fishers and the marine resources he will stay. His work with Rare has opened up a nice opportunity to tackle an old behavior change problem (lack of success / effectiveness of MPAs) with a new solution and way of looking at the problem (Pride)..
BSc - Applied Biology - Fisheries Science, University of Hull, U.K. MSC - Integrated Coastal Zone Management, University of Ulster, U.K.
I joined my first dynamite fishing trip to the North of Bohol, Philippines (my home in 1995) in a place called the Danajon Bank and watched literally everything blown up by a group of poor fishers (poor literally and educationally) - dynamiting was their "livelihood" and back then there was very little stigma associated with dynamite fishing and they were in fact very proud and macho dynamiters! After seeing that I realized it wasn't so much that these people were "bad", they were just doing what they knew best - but it did tell me the whole "system" was wrong and there was lots for me to do.. I still haven't left 15 years on and there is still lot's to do!
