Abaco Site Visit Day 5: Moore’s Island

The day began with a much improved weather situation!! No rain and few clouds meant that the flight to Moore’s Island would not only be smoother, but would also provide beautiful views.   Since the regular flights actually only run Monday, Wednesday, Friday, we had to charter a plane. This led us to having slightly larger plane- 8 seats!

Abaco Site Visit Day 4: Rainy Work Day

We woke up early to a dark and rainy day and headed over to the airport where we were supposed to board a six-passenger plane to Moore’s Island. However, as we sat in the lobby contemplating the risks of going up in a small plane on a blustery, cloudy, rainy day, the principal of the school we were supposed to go visit entered the building. She informed us that the rain would cause us problems, not for flying, but for two other reasons: 1) the assembly we were to be presenting at is held outside and 2) there is low attendance on rainy days because the children have to walk to school. So, with that information, we stayed behind as the school principal boarded the plane alone.  [However, all that time spent in the lobby gave us the opportunity to read an article on the campaign featured in the Coastal Angler t

Abaco Site Visit: Rainy Monday

We had plans to leave early this morning on a short flight to Moore's Island for a school visit and a fishers meeting.  Unfortunately, it was too rainy and windy for the school visit - they were planning on a full school assembly and the only place with enough room for all of the students was outside.  So, we had to scratch the trip today, and will try again tomorrow morning.

Abaco Site Visit Day 4: The Expo, Lionfish, and Geno D

Today was a full day, starting again with setting up the Pride campaign booth at the All Abaco Agricultural, Marine Resources, and Agribusiness Expo. Without the Prime Minister there to draw the crowds early, it didn’t start picking up until a little later than yesterday. Once it did though, the booth was buzzing. All ages came to learn more about the campaign and the Spiny Lobster. One of my favorite activities of the day at the booth was getting people to try to eyeball 5 ½ inches with their hands and then using the key chain measuring tapes to check their guess. It provided for some good laughs, particularly among the children.            &nb

Site Visit: Expo Extravaganza!

Another great day in Abaco. Today was day two of the All Abaco Expo. We started bright and early (I posted a little video, you can find it on the Resources page) to help man the booth for the Size Matters campaign.

Abaco Site Visit Day 3: The All Abaco Agricultural, Marine Resources & Agribusiness Expo

The day of the Expo is here!! Of course, we only had to wait two days for the Expo, while D’Shan had been hard at work for much longer planning and preparing for the two-day event. Being the first time this event was held in Abaco, and with the Prime Minister in attendance, the Expo drew quite a crowd. We arrived early (after some last minute preparations in the Friends of the Environment office) and were quickly blocked in by an entire row of double-parked cars.
