About Me

I am Joy (Santi Saypanya), I am a Conservation Education and Outreach Officer in WCS Lao PDR Programme in Lao People Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), and I have a BBA in Business Administration.  In my current position, my main responsibilities are collaborating with government counterpart to design conservation outreach materials, print media, wayside and activities for the “Tigers Forever” conservation education project in the Nam Et - Phou Louey National Protected Area  in the north of Laos

Currently, I am a senior project officer at the WCS, Lao country office, resposible for many different aspects of conservation education and outreach.  All of my work focuses on the outreach component of the NEPL NPA “Tiger’s Forever Site” located in the nothern part of Laos. I have been implementing conservation education and outreach programs for nearly 5 years.  During this time with WCS, I have helped design conservation education and outreach activities, produce conservation materials, used mass media (radio) as a tool for conservation, and conducted project monitoring and evaluation.  Most of this time I have spent working with local communities throughout Lao in order to secure biodiversity while securing food security for them.

Second communities visit is completely implemented

The second villages visit of Nam Et - Phou Louey social marketing campaign is completely implemented, all most the campaign materials were given to every household in 36 communities with an exception of the campaign album CDs which were produced after the second village started and only 16 villages received the CDs, there are 20 villages to be received the CDs in early August. We made it!

Keep the momentum of the campaign alive

On the occasion of National Wildlife Day (July 13), the campaign member saw this event as the big potential to keep the momentum of our campaign alive. The campaign team members set up a booth right center of Viengthong district, all of the campaign materials (poster, comic book, sticker, campaign album etc) were displayed at the booth. Also wildlife photos exhibition was displayed at the booth and anti-illegal hunting and wildlife signs were displayed around the town, the team had questions for people who passed by, the winner was the one who answer the quesiton collectly get campaign materials which related to the question. This event was officially opened by the District Governor and most of the high ranking positions of the district participate with the event.

In the evening of July 3rd 2010, the Wildlife Crimes Unit from Viengthong District Huaphan Province recieved a call from the hotline that a couple had endangered wildlife in thier possession in That Hiem Village, Viengthong District.

The latest on the gaur bile case at Nam Et Phou Louey (NEPL) National Protected Area (NPA)

Today the husband and wife team who purchased gaur bile from two Hmong villages near the border of the NEPL NPA on July 3rd were given the choice to participate in an investigation of the sellers of the bile, or be sent to the provincial jail and court in Hua Phan province. The offenders chose to cooperate with authorities under the assurance they would be given a reduced sentence. 
This morning the Viengthong Wildlife Crime Unit mobilized to Sop Lao Village, Hua Muang District, Hua Phan Province to investigate who sold the gaur gallbladders. Observers from Sop Lao village confirmed that two Hmong woman did, in fact, sell the gallbladders to the Hin Huap couple. However, government officials were unable to apprehend the sellers of the gaur bile.   The couple’s fine was reduced from $1830 to $975 USD and their jail sentence suspended allowing them to return to their village at Hin Huap, Vientiane Province.
