I Knew I was a Conservationist When....

I went camping for a month in Wyoming during the snow season (otherwise known as June), endured 20 days of precipitation with nothing but tarps to sleep under, and still called myself an outdoorsy person afterwards.

Children mobilizing pride for the Golden monkey in Yunnan, China

This field visit focused specifically on the activities and progress to date of The Nature Conservancy’s Rare Pride campaign running in Baima Snow Mountain Nature Reserve. The campaign is working to reduce fuelwood consumption and targeting a few specific audiences, including farmers who use fuelwood to prepare cooked food for livestock, and women’s groups who lead fuelwood collection for the purposes of cooking in villages. Sina Zhuoma, a reserve staff member, is the courageous and lovely campaign manager overseeing this campaign and partnering with these key audiences to make an impact.

We visited a Tibetan school, where teachers and students had dancing, contests and other activities planned to raise awareness about deforestation and to inspire pride in the Golden monkey.

Falling in love with the people of the forest

Laney Thornton, a passionate conservationist and long-time Rare supporter, just returned with his family from a five-day visit to a Rare Pride campaign underway on the island of Borneo.  Laney’s family witnessed first-hand both the beauty and the importance of saving this critical orangutan habitat, and learned what Rare and local partner Yayorin are doing to help this community successfully address this conservation challenge.
