I grew up in Cambridge, MA - not exactly nature, but I always was frustrated by the fact that we could not go swimming in the Charles River or in the Atlantic near Boston. When we went sailing on the Charles I thought it was shameful that we had to shower afterwards or run the risk that the spray from the river would irritate our skin. Later I had the privilege for working for a State Rep from Cape Cod. We worked on legislation that supported the building of the waste treatment facility on Deer Island. This eliminated the dumping of raw sewage into the Atlantic and took Boston from the best 19th century technology to the best of the 20th century. This project not only makes the harbor a better recreational area, but has helped local fish stocks critical to Massachusetts’s economy and heritage.

Step by step guide to using Positive Deviance. What this illustrates is that positive deviance is not a matter of luck, but driving a process. In all the communities in which we work there are people "doing the right thing." They are the positive deviants. Or in more positive terms, "Bright Spots." If we follow a template, such as this, we can use these bright spots to drive adoption of the campaign goals - they illustrate that the campaign's goals are possible. Let the bright spots shine.
